Two grandchildren greet their grandparents at the door with Christmas presents.

If you're looking to give back this holiday season, helping your local seniors is a great place to start! The holidays are such a festive time of year filled with joy, and it's really all about the season of giving. So, this holiday season we have a list of ways that you can help!

#1: Check in on them.

Whether you're visiting your grandfather or popping over to see your neighbor, don't forget about seniors during the holiday season. Holidays can be hard on aging adults if they live alone or won't be able to see their families. Visiting, even for a short while, can make their whole day.

#2: Help them decorate!

One of the best parts of the holidays is decorating your space. As we age, decorating can take more time, energy, and work. Offer to help set up their tree and or unpack boxes for them. This small task won't take you much time but will be so meaningful.

#3: Share a favorite recipe.

Does your grandma love to bake? Offer to spend the day with her and learn the recipe for those cookies everyone loves. She'll love nothing more than to share this family recipe with you!

#4: Spread the holiday cheer!

Get into the festivity of the holidays by caroling, creating holiday cards, or handing out hot chocolate. A small gesture can go a long way during the season of giving.

#5: Spend time together.

No one likes to be alone for the holidays and this can contribute to feelings of loneliness. If you know they're struggling this time of year, invite them over to watch holiday movies or help wrap presents.

At the end of the day, sometimes it's less about what you do and more about just being there. For those struggling with loneliness this time of year or missing loved ones, sometimes the thing they need the most is just companionship. Ask yourself who could use a friend this holiday season. Whether you're lending an ear or being the person that they share past holiday memories with, your presence can be the best gift of all.
